The Very Best in Education, 21st century style Exercise and reading? Peas in a pod! This year’s HCLS summer reading clubs artfully combine these ingredients to deliver all kinds of fun, activities, and intellectual fitness for students of all ages.

read from their novels and discuss hopefulness (p. 6). And on June 21 and 29, local author Kathy MacMillan introduces her young adult fantasy novel, Sword and Verse, which tackles prejudice, political struggle, and the power of words (p. 6).

We invite you to enroll in one of four Summer Reading Clubs: Champion Readers (infants through pre-K), On Your Mark, Get Set . . . Read! (K-5), Get in the Game, Read! (middle school), and Exercise Your Mind (high school students and adults). Join us on Saturday, June 4 to Kick Off summer reading in grand style. Baltimore Hoop Love and Kangaroo Kids will offer energetic performances and Race Pace Bicycles will be on hand to demonstrate how to size kids to bikes and correctly fit helmets.

As we gear up for the next school year, incoming kindergarteners won’t want to miss Kindergarten, Here We Come! Part of A+ Partners in Education, this popular class teaches children (and their anxious parents) what to expect in their first year of school, building excitement and soothing nerves (students even practice boarding a real school bus!). Similarly, Movin’ Up to Middle School offers rising 6th graders handy tips, locker combination time trials, and the opportunity to meet new friends.

The new HCLS Youth Marathon challenges everyone in grades K-12 to complete a marathon one step at a time throughout the summer. The concluding segments will be completed at the Discover Downtown Columbia 5K and Fun Run on September 25.

Lastly, whatever you do and wherever you go this summer, and whether you prefer print or eBooks—take us with you. Our extensive eBook and audiobook collection is just a click away on our website at HCLS Now!

Our spectacular author event line-up for June definitely rates as must-see. Pulitzer Prizewinning journalist Sarah Kaufman on June 27 (p. 7) discusses The Art of Grace: On Moving Well Through Life. On June 11, debut authors Melanie Conklin, Jennifer Maschari, and Laura Shovan

We hope you will consider HCLS “required reading” for your active, fun-filled summer!

Look for SNEAK PEEKS throughout this issue to see what HCLS instructors look forward to reading this summer. I’m looking forward to reading A Noise in Time by Julian Barnes, a novel about the sneak peek life of Shostakovich and the uneasy relationship between art and politics in a totalitarian regime. Barnes is one of our foremost cultural critics, and this is certain to be a thoughtful examination of the choices and compromises artists make for the sake of their work. - Julie Fitzpatrick, Instructor and Research Specialist, Miller Branch

In this insightful and witty book, Sarah L. Kaufman reflects on the graceful moments, both physical and emotional, that we encounter in our culture and discusses the importance of grace in our everyday lives. Citing models of grace such as Cary Grant and Beyoncé, Kaufman inspires her readers to be conscious of the way we move through the world, to be kinder, and to celebrate the precious moments in our daily lives. Sarah L. Kaufman is the dance critic for The Washington Post, where she has written about the arts, sports, and culture for more than 20 years. Her many journalism awards include the 2010 Pulitzer Prize in Criticism. She received an MSJ from Northwestern University and is a former French-American Foundation journalism fellow. 5 QUESTIONS WITH THE AUTHOR In The Art of Grace, you cite Cary Grant as an example of grace. What is your favorite Cary Grant movie? It’s tough to choose, but Notorious is my favorite. I love the tension in this dark thriller, which is also studded with moments of incredible tenderness. The first time I saw it, I was hyperventilating at the end, thinking: Would he get to her in time? Ingrid Bergman’s quiet hurt, Grant’s quiet devotion: So much is unsaid. Yet—and this is the subtle grace— Grant and Bergman are masters at conveying the submerged complications of feeling. What part of writing The Art of Grace did you enjoy the most? This is another tough choice! Thinking and writing about grace was a pleasure from start to finish, because I learned so much, every single day. I wrote chunks of the book in the Library of Congress’s beautiful main reading room—possibly, that is what I enjoyed most. That is also where I researched much of the history of how grace has been valued and taught. I loved poring over a thick, slightly crumbling edition of Lord

Chesterfield’s “Letters to His Son on the Fine Art of Becoming a Man of the World,” written in the 1700s. I had so much fun reading the vintage pamphlets and books from the 1930s that I quote from. I just love the writing style of that era, so precise and thoughtful. It feels very fresh.

end? For me, it encompasses life in general, facing each day with love, gratitude and a sense of service.

Do you have a motto in life? If so, what is it?

Being in the mountains with my family. The Appalachians and the Rockies are favorites, but since we are talking about the dream, let’s go for the French Pyrenees. I was there several years ago when I covered the Tour de France for The Washington Post, and I’d love to return—the landscape is so dramatic, so green, so rustic. And the people are lovely.

When I was a child, my mother used to tell me: Nothing ventured, nothing gained. This reminds me to be brave, to overcome fear and try something new. As a shy person with a lot of dreams, this has helped me a great deal. A second motto I hold very dear is from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince: ‘You are responsible for your rose.’ This is about caring, and how caring and spending time on care is essential, valuable, beautiful. This is what grace is all about, too: taking care of those around us, other people, a child, an animal, a garden. SaintExupery’s words remind me of the duty to love, protect and actively care for living things that are dependent on me—and where does that boundary

Summer is here, and many of us are looking forward to a well-deserved vacation. What would be your dream vacation?

What would you recommend as an enriching summer read? Katherine Anne Porter’s Pale Horse, Pale Rider, which is a collection of three short novels. Porter is underrated today, but she is a genius writer. Her prose is effortless, her observation is exquisite. She skewers hypocrisy. There’s no one like her.
