Fewer black men applied to medical school in 2014 than in 1978 and black men have the lowest life expectancy in the United States. With only 2% of American doctors being black men, this comes as no surprise. This documentary dissects the systemic barriers preventing black men from becoming medical doctors and the consequences on society at large.
Health care accounts for nearly 20% of the United State’s GDP and a significant portion of that is driven by disparities in a system that lacks diverse physicians. What if we had a medical workforce that actually reflected our patient population? What challenges do our black boys face? Who are their role models? Why is it easier to visualize a black man in an orange jumpsuit than it is in a white coat? What’s happening in society that more black women are becoming doctors while black men are stagnant?
This film screening was funded by the Friends of the St. Mary's County Library.
Partner Organizations: Howard County Library System, Charles County Public Library, Calvert County Public Library, St. Mary’s County Public Schools, Historic Sotterly, St. Mary's County NAACP, and Partners in Dismantling Racism & Privilege.

The Bauder Lecture by Howard Community College is made possible by a generous grant from Dr. Lillian Bauder, a community leader and Columbia resident. Howard Community College will present an annual endowed author lecture known as The Bauder Lecture, and the chosen book will be celebrated with two student awards. Known as the Don Bauder Awards, any Howard Community College student who has read the featured book is eligible to respond and reflect on the book in an essay or other creative format. The awards honor the memory of Don Bauder, late husband of Dr. Lillian Bauder and a champion of civil rights and social justice causes.
“Friday Black” was selected by the Howard County Book Connection committee as its choice for the 2020–2021 academic year. The Howard County Book Connection is a partnership of Howard Community College and the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society. "Inter(esting) Sex: Beyond the Binary”
Talk by Dr. Laura Cripps, professor of anthropology and geography
In the words of Gloria Steinem, “the first problem for all of us, men and women, is not to learn, but to unlearn”. Debates on non-binary gender identities covering topics ranging from bathroom bills and educational curriculum to Sam Smith and Caitlyn Jenner have been grounded in assumptions of a binary biological classification of sex, with the supposition that gender fluidity is fundamentally unsupported by the sex-binary. Except, sex isn’t binary. This presentation will illustrate the differences between the identification of sex and gender, and establish that the biological reality of non-binary sex has always been part of humanity.
Tuesday, March 9, at 6 p.m.
"What’s Going On? American Politics 1970–2020”
Talk by Dr. Michael Heffren, professor of social sciences
In 1970, the year that Howard Community College opened, the country was deeply divided with political protest, social unrest, conflicts over racism, and urban riots. Marvin Gaye wrote the song “What’s Going On” that year to ask the question “Why?”. We could ask that same question today. Is this a case of the more things change, the more they stay the same? In fact, it’s quite different. In this talk, trace the changes in American politics over the past 50 years and try to answer the question: “What’s Going On?”
Tuesday, March 16, at 6 p.m.
The Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution: Know Its Meaning and How It Protects Your Rights”

Tuesday, March 23, at 6 p.m.
"De-escalation Techniques From Behind the Wall”
Talk by Dr. Eric Clark, assistant professor of criminal justice
In the past several years, our American criminal justice system has been widely criticized for routine police encounters resulting in citizen deaths. Much of this scrutiny emanates from the failure to use de-escalation techniques, which have been found to be effective in correctional settings. This lecture seeks to examine how closed-custody correctional de-escalation methods could improve outcomes in police detention and arrest incidents with the public.

Author Works: Brandon Hobson & "The Removed" (Online)
Date: 03/10/21Time: 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Branch: Online Branch
Age group: Ages 18+ (Adults)
Program type: Book Clubs
Description:
Steeped in Cherokee myths and history, a novel about a fractured family reckoning with the tragic death of their son long ago—from National Book Award finalist Brandon Hobson
“Brandon Hobson has given us a haunted work, full of voices old and new. It is about a family’s reckoning with loss and injustice, and it is about a people trying for the same. The journey of this family’s way home is full—in equal measure—of melancholy and love. The Removed is spirited, droll, and as quietly devastating as rain lifting from earth to sky.”
—Tommy Orange, author of There There
In the fifteen years since their teenage son, Ray-Ray, was killed in a police shooting, the Echota family has been suspended in private grief. With the family’s annual bonfire approaching—an occasion marking both the Cherokee National Holiday and Ray-Ray’s death, and a rare moment in which they openly talk about his memory—The mother, Maria, attempts to call the family together from their physical and emotional distances once more.
Drawing deeply on Cherokee folklore, The Removed seamlessly blends the real and spiritual to excavate the deep reverberations of trauma—a meditation on family, grief, home, and the power of stories on both a personal and ancestral level.
Brandon Hobson will be in conversation with Susan Thornton Hobby, HoCoPoLitSo.
Preorder The Removed (February 2021) from Books with a Past.
Brandon Hobson (Author) is the author of the novel Where the Dead Sit Talking, which was a finalist for the 2018 National Book Award for Fiction and winner of the Reading the West Book Award. His other books include Desolation of Avenues Untold and the novella Deep Ellum. His work has appeared in the Pushcart Prize anthology, The Believer, the Paris Review Daily, Conjunctions, NOON, and McSweeney’s, among other places. He is an assistant professor of creative writing at New Mexico State University and teaches in the MFA program at the Institute of American Indian Arts. Hobson is an enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation Tribe of Oklahoma.
Susan Thornton Hobby (Conversation partner) is a writer, editor, and literary consultant. For fifteen years, she has worked as a special projects coordinator for HoCoPoLitSo, the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society, and has served on the society’s board for more than twenty years.

Branch: Online Branch

Program type: Book Clubs
Description:
A stunning, deeply satisfying story about how we outlive our upbringings. —Kirkus Reviews
Gripping, thought-provoking, and equal parts hilarious and wrenching, Filthy Beasts is the story of a once-wealthy family whose gilded lives fell to pieces.
Following a rancorous split from New York’s upper-class society, newly divorced Wendy and her three sons are exiled from the East Coast elite circle. Wendy’s middle son, Kirk, is eight when she moves the family to her native Bermuda, leaving the three young boys to fend for themselves as she chases after the highs of her old life: alcohol, a wealthy new suitor, and other indulgences. Kirk learns to maintain appearances and bury his inconvenient truths from the world, until he leaves the island, falls in love for the first time, and begins to discover the freedom of telling his truth.
Author Kirkland Hamill will discuss his memoir with Michaela Carter in this candid interview.
Kirkland Hamill has written for Salon and The Advocate, and was formerly the chief development and marketing officer at the National Center for Family Philanthropy. He lives in Baltimore, Maryland, with his husband and a dog named Blue.
Michaela Carter is a writer, painter, and award-winning poet. Her novel Further Out Than You Thought was an Indie Next List Pick, and was the Arizona Republic Critic’s Pick for Best Debut Author in 2014. Her poetry won the Poetry Society of America Los Angeles New Poets Contest, has been nominated for Pushcart Prizes, and has appeared in numerous anthologies and journals. She is the cofounder of the independent bookstore the Peregrine Book Company in Prescott, Arizona, where she lives with her husband and two dogs. Her historical novel, Leonora In the Morning Light, about the artists Leonora Carrington and Max Ernst, and the art collector Peggy Guggenheim, is forthcoming from Avid Reader Press in April, 2021.

Talk by Evelyn Del Rosario, assistant professor of criminal justice
This talk delves into the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Learn the history of the Amendment, and its significance in protecting our privacy and limiting the power of the government.
Harriet Tubman and Harriet Beecher Stowe (Online)
Date: 03/23/21Time: 7:00pm - 8:30pm
Branch: Online Branch
Age group: Ages 14 - 17 (High School), Ages 18+ (Adults)
Program type: History & Genealogy
Description:
“So you’re the little lady who started this great war!” said President Abraham Lincoln in the fall of 1862 when he finally met Harriet Beecher Stowe. This “little lady” was the author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin a roller-coaster anti-slavery novel that had become a huge best-seller after its publication in 1852. Lincoln and many other people at the time believed that Stowe’s novel had caused the Civil War by intensifying public sentiment against slavery in the North and by spurring a reactionary surge of proslavery feeling in the states that would later secede from the United States to form the Confederate States of America. But Lincoln might just have well have been talking to and about Harriet Tubman. Like Stowe, Tubman’s activism advanced the fight against slavery and edged this country closer to Civil War. As the most famous conductor on the Underground Railroad, Tubman and her allies built an antislavery escape network that stretched from the bowels of the slave South all the way into British Canada. Join us for a talk about both of these American icons with University of Maryland historian Dr. Richard Bell.
Dr. Richard Bell is Professor of History at the University of Maryland. He holds a PhD from Harvard University and is author of the new book Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and their Astonishing Odyssey Home which is shortlisted for the George Washington Prize and the Harriet Tubman Prize. He has won more than a dozen teaching awards, including the University System of Maryland Board of Regents Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching, the highest honor for teaching faculty in the Maryland state system. He has held major research fellowships at Yale, Cambridge, and the Library of Congress and is the recipient of the National Endowment of the Humanities Public Scholar award. He serves as a Trustee of the Maryland Center for History and Culture, as an elected member of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, and as a fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Learn more here.
Sponsored by Friends and Foundation of Howard County Library System with support from Howard County Historical Society, Carroll County Public Library, Charles County Public Library, Kent County Public Library, Prince George's County Memorial Library System, Ruth Enlow Library of Garrett County, Talbot County Free Library, and Worcester County Library.

Branch: Online Branch
Age group: Ages 18+ (Adults)
Program type: Community & Culture
Description:
“Tennis is a preparatory sport for becoming who you are. It builds character and resilience both inside and outside the sport. It teaches us what it means to have a good loss that helps us to develop smarter strategies for the next match, along with the endurance and persistence that comes from repeatedly falling on your face.”—Katrina M. Adams
From the former President, Chairman and CEO of the United States Tennis Association—the first Black and youngest person ever to hold the position—comes a behind-the-scenes look at the leadership skills involved in hosting the US Open, the largest attended sports event in the world— lessons that can be applied to any situation or personal challenge.
In OWN THE ARENA: Getting Ahead, Making a Difference, and Succeeding as the Only One, Katrina M. Adams takes readers on a privileged look into the US Open, which has been described as “a 14-day Superbowl,” while revealing what makes tennis the sport of a lifetime.
In this powerful conversation with Stacie Hunt, CEO of Leadership Howard County, Adams explores her experiences of learning how to navigate a room as the only Black woman, notes how she learned to standout in those spaces, how the sportsmanship lessons learned from tennis can be applied to all aspects of life, and how to surround yourself with not only powerful mentors, but the importance of keeping family close, to advise and empower you on your journey forward.

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH CELEBRATION
“When I began to listen to poetry, it’s when I began to listen to the stones, and I began to listen to what the clouds had to say, and I began to listen to others. And I think, most importantly for all of us, then you begin to learn to listen to the soul, the soul of yourself in here, which is also the soul of everyone else.” - National Poet Laureate Joy Harjo
Poetry sometimes seems impenetrable. But interest in the ancient art has picked up after dynamic young inaugural poet Amanda Gorman read her work. Join Susan Thornton Hobby of HoCoPoLitSo (the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society) for a discussion and introduction to verse with HoCoPoLitSo's Poetry Moment series, featuring local actors offering introductions to videos of famous poets. Each week, we'll learn about three poems based around a theme, including history, grief, family, and pep talks."
Young actors Chania Hudson, Sarah Luckadoo, and Shawn Sebastian Naar from Howard Community College’s Arts Collective will read introductions to the archival video of poets and their work. Poets we'll be hearing from include Lucille Clifton, National Poet Laureate Joy Harjo, Taylor Mali, Jason Reynolds, Sterling A. Brown, Eavan Boland, and Li-Young Lee.
Susan Thornton Hobby is a writer, editor, and literary consultant. For fifteen years, she has worked as a special projects coordinator for HoCoPoLitSo, the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society, and has served on the society’s board for more than twenty years. She is a founding member of the Little Patuxent Review and interviews nationally known authors for that literary magazine. Susan is also a freelance writer and editor, and writes her own fiction and poetry.

Women & the American Revolution (Part 1 of 4) (Online)
Date: 04/07/21Time: 12:00pm - 1:00pm
Branch: Online Branch
Age group: Ages 14 - 17 (High School), Ages 18+ (Adults)
Program type: History & Genealogy
Description:
The revolutionary war was fought on battlefields, in forests, and on the homefront—and the contributions of American women shaped the fight at every turn. They did this in every way imaginable, and while some prospered and thrived when the war came, others faltered and fell. Many American women fought for the patriot cause while almost as many others fought to stop them. The incredible spectrum of female participation in America’s founding conflict defies easy categorization and reminds us that the legacy of the revolution for American women was not simple, single, or remotely cut and dried. This four-part course examines the varied roles of women in the American Revolution. Lecture one explores the life of Jane Mecom, the beloved but beggared sister of Benjamin Franklin whose rollercoaster ride through the American Revolution illuminates the experiences of other women on society’s bottom ranks. Lecture two pushes deep into the war itself to reconstruct the wartime experiences of Deborah Sampson, the 21-year-old weaver who disguised herself as a man to serve 17 distinguished months in George Washington’s Continental Army. Lecture three tells the story of Molly Brant, the Native Mohawk woman who spent the war trying to hold together the fragile military alliance between the Iroquois League and the British Army. Lecture four then follows the story of the American Revolution into the Early Republic, using the life of Maine midwife Martha Ballard to understand how women’s lives changed—and stayed the same—after the patriots won the war.
Part 1. Jane Mecom: This first lecture reconstructs the American Revolution from the perspective of Jane Mecom, the widow of a Boston shopkeeper—and the favorite little sister of Benjamin Franklin. During the war, Jane would be menaced by soldiers and made a refugee. She would lose her home and her possessions. All this was sadly typical for many other poor women brought low by the revolutionary crisis.
Part 2. Deborah Sampson: This second lecture tells the extraordinary story of Deborah Sampson, the young Massachusetts woman who disguised herself as a man named Robert Shurtlieff in order to fight in the Continental Army. It poses some simple questions: Who was she? Why she did she do it? How did she get away with it? And how did her wartime adventures in George Washington’s Army change her life?
Part 3. Molly Brant: This third lecture explores the American Revolution in Indian Country by focusing upon a Native Mohawk known to us as Molly Brant, the widow of a powerful British diplomat. Straddling two worlds – British and Iroquois – Molly spent the war trying to the fill the political vacuum created by her husband’s death and quickly emerged as the most important military and cultural broker in Native America.
Part 4. Martha Ballard: This last lecture tells the story of a Maine midwife named Martha Ballard, a quiet, dutiful wife, a busy mother, and a kind neighbor whose life was lived entirely in some very small towns. For that reason, perhaps, although she lived through many exciting changes in urban women’s sexual and political circumstances, her life seems – on the surface at least – to have been almost untouched by the 18thcentury gender revolution.

Women & the American Revolution (Part 2 of 4) (Online)
Date: 04/14/21Time: 12:00pm - 1:00pm

Women & the American Revolution (Part 4 of 4) (Online)
Date: 04/28/21Time: 12:00pm - 1:00pm

Hooking Your Reader: Writing A Killer First Line (Online)
Date: 05/05/21Time: 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Branch: Online Branch
Age group: Ages 18+ (Adults)
Program type: Writing
Description:
Most editors of both magazines and presses will say that they read the first, last and middle page of a story before deciding if they want to read more. Potential readers are even less forgiving. When I pick up a new book, if the first line doesn’t hook me, I probably won’t continue reading. So how do we snag our readers and make them want to read more? In this workshop, we’ll look at examples of powerful first lines and discuss strategies for selecting a powerful first line. Feel free to bring the first line of your story or novel for a mini first-line “workshop.”

What We Can Learn from Anne Frank, Her Life and Surprising Legacy
Date: 05/06/21Time: 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Branch: Online Branch
Age group: Ages 14 - 17 (High School), Ages 18+ (Adults)
Program type: History & Genealogy
Description:
This talk provides a unique insight into the life and times of Anne Frank. While building the Anne Frank Trust, Gillian has been privileged to meet some of those who knew Anne Frank and who have quietly shared their personal memories with her, as well as many Holocaust survivors who had parallel experiences to those of Anne Frank, some of whom were with her in the concentration camps.
Gillian takes the story of Anne’s life through her family background in Frankfurt, their flight to Amsterdam, Anne’s emerging personality as a popular and irreverent school girl, her desperation in hiding (as described by the family’s courageous helper Miep Gies), her physical and emotional transition into an adolescent and her developing moral framework, which has proved to be an inspirational to millions. Gillian will describe Anne’s tragic and poignant last days, including from first hand witnesses.
This talk also discusses the effect of learning about Anne Frank on millions of people around the world, some in desperate and difficult situations. It contextualises the Anne Frank educational projects against the background of world history over the past 30 years and explains the impact she has had in some of the world’s most turbulent and violent regions.
Gillian will also talk about some of the remarkable people who have been involved in her work, including Nelson Mandela and Audrey Hepburn, and describes the unforgettable night she spent attending the 1996 Academy Awards in Hollywood together with Miep Gies, the courageous helper of the Frank family in hiding.
Gillian Walnes Perry's popular book 'The Legacy of Anne Frank' is available to borrow at HCLS, or for purchase through Books With A Past.
Gillian Walnes Perry was the Co-founder and Executive Director of the Anne Frank Trust UK. The Trust was set up in 1990, along with family and friends of Mr Otto Frank. Show Don’t Tell: Learning to Write from Video Games (online)
Date: 06/21/21Time: 1:00pm - 2:00pm
Branch: Online Branch
Age group: Ages 14 - 17 (High School), Ages 18+ (Adults)
Program type: Writing
Description:
The popular saying goes: “A picture’s worth a thousand words.” With the rapid developments in technology, our storytelling is changing to not just be on the page, but through movies, television, and video games--highly visual mediums. Through the power of images, we can convey a whole story in a short space. Games like Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Gone Home use environmental storytelling to give us pieces of characters’ lives. In this workshop, we’ll discuss examples of games that tell stories through objects, and go into our own writing exercises inspired by video games.
