Howard County Library System enhances students’ academic success through enhanced self-directed education opportunities for school assignments, research projects and test preparation, as well as expert research assistance from HCLS instructors. With a library card, students access a collection of one million items, including books, e-resources, and specialized online research tools, such as Online Homework Assistance, Biography Resource Center, and Learning Express Library.

In addition, students are invited to participate in the following A+ academic competitions:

• BumbleBee (Grades 1 - 3)
• HCLS Spelling Bee (Grades 4 - 8)
• Rube Goldberg Challenge (Grades 4 - 5)
• Battle of the Books (Grade 5)
• Sherlock Holmes Essay Contest (Grade 7)
• HCLS Teen Idol (middle and high school students)
• Write! Now Poetry Contest (middle and high school students)
