Join HCLS President and CEO Tonya Kennon, County Executive Calvin Ball, County Council Member Deb Jung, Maryland State Delegate Terri Hill, HCPSS Superintendent Michael Martirano, and other elected officials and leaders for remarks and presentations as we celebrate Saketh’s historic win.
Congratulations to four-time HCLS Spelling Bee champion Saketh Sundar and his co-champs for winning the 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee!
This year’s eight-way championship was unprecedented. After the 17th round, pronouncer Jacques Bailly announced that any of the eight remaining contestants who made it through three more rounds would share the prize. Saketh, speller 132, won by correctly spelling bougainvillea in Round 20.
Saketh was the first four-time champion of the Howard County Library System Spelling Bee. His winning words were physiology in 2016, samphire in 2017, boudin in 2018, and crevette in 2019. Saketh is an eighth grade student at Clarksville Middle School.
Sponsors: Thanks to BB&T, Friends & Foundation of Howard County Library System, Howard County Public School System, and the Josephine B. Scheffenacker Education Trust for sponsoring the HCLS Spelling Bee and underwriting Saketh’s trip to the National Bee.
