What do we know about the real Bixby, Oklahoma, location of the fictional drama that surrounds Jessica Day and her band of Midnighters?
Well for a start, there’s a real Bixby High School. Makes you wonder if the blue time is really the invention of Scott Westerfeld, doesn’t it?
If you’d like to pay a virtual visit to Bixby, you can check it out on Google Maps, and take a stroll through downtown with Google Street View. If you’d like to investigate further, Bixby Historical Society have a presence online. There are some great historical maps on their web site, although no mention of slithers and darklings or the snake pit!
For more great information about the history of the town of Bixby, take a look at the Oklahoma Historical Society’s Encyclopedia of Oklahoma History and Culture. You never know… one of our Pass the Book quizzes might deal with the history of the real Bixby!
And why is Bixby a front in this war? Why is this part of Oklahoma the center of the battle between humanity and the Darklings? It’s all to do with latitude and longitude, remember? Slithers love the number 12, but can’t deal with the number 13. Bixby is located (at least in the Wester-world) at 36°N 96°W?? / 36; -96. The Blue Hour occurs in Bixby because 36 is a powerful number that the Darklings love, as is 96, and the digits of these four numbers added together is 24, another multiple of 12. There’s a mystical convergence of powerful multiples of twelve in this fictional Bixby that allows the Darklings to reappear. (In reality, 36°N 96°W is north-west of Bixby, in Jenks, OK. I wonder if the rain hangs in the sky at midnight there?)
There’s going to be more coming soon about latitude and longitude, and about the other places in the world where there might be Midnighters and Darklings. For now, explore Bixby a little, and don’t forget to read, register and pass your copy of Midnighters: The Secret Hour by Scott Westerfeld around Howard County and beyond. Do you know anyone in Oklahoma you could pass a copy to?
