“As most parents believe, the education of my children is paramount. Their exposure to learning experiences outside of a typical classroom setting is a vital part of that education. That is what makes the Enchanted Garden at Howard County Library System Miller Branch so meaningful to me. This sustainable, community-based teaching garden provides a unique learning environment for children and nature lovers of all ages.
Howard County Library System is committed to forging pathways to discovery, and the Enchanted Garden is a tangible example of that pledge. HCLS provides a range of interactive experiences in the Enchanted Garden’s outdoor eco-classroom through classes, Explorer Packs filled with supplies for self-guided activities, and youth gardening clubs. Children learn about the benefit of native plants, the importance of pollinators, and why monarch butterflies need our help. Community members lend their expertise and impart gardening knowledge that fosters intergenerational relationships. Every season offers a new opportunity for growth and learning that families can share together.
“With today’s unavoidable engagement to technology and over-commitment in our lives, making time to appreciate nature and the important role it plays both globally and on a local level is a relevant necessity. My yearly donation to HCLS Friends and Foundation ensures that the Enchanted Garden, along with other HCLS enrichment programs, will remain supported and nurtured for the benefit of our community. And that’s what it means to be a “Friend.”
