“As the director of the Library and Learning Commons at Howard Community College, I fully understand the importance of reading. I know first-hand that access to books, positive reading practices, and a connection with educational institutions supportive of self-discovery make a difference in the lives of students.
Thanks to Howard County Library System, engaging reading experiences are always available and this is particularly important during students’ summer breaks. Studies show that without classroom access and support, students, especially those from lower income families, lose a portion of the academic gains they make during the school year. HCLS Summer Reading Clubs help offset this “summer slide” and play a vital role in both maintaining and advancing children’s reading levels.
This year’s Summer Reading theme is “Libraries Rock!” — and I couldn’t agree more! That’s why I joined Friends & Foundation of Howard County Library System. My yearly donation helps provide books as a reward for a child’s summer reading effort. And seeing their eyes light up when they receive that book is my reward. That’s what it means to be a “Friend!
