Howard County Library System and Howard County Public Schools use universal icons to designate areas of the Library and corresponding areas of HCPSS elementary school media centers. The icons are posted in the Children’s department of all Library branches and in HCPSS elementary school media centers.
Prior to Kindergarten and Pre-Kindergarten class visits to the Library, students have participated in mapping experiences at their school and are familiar maps with universal icons of their school’s media center.
Library maps incorporating universal icons are distributed to Kindergarten and Pre-Kindergarten students when their class visits the Library. During their tour of the Library, the students enjoy finding the icons posted in the Children’s department.
