It uses as its case study the ordeal of William Russell, a privateer from New England who spent thirty months trying to escape from England’s Mill Prison before being transferred to the Jersey, a de-masted prison hulk floating in Brooklyn Bay in British-occupied New York. On the Jersey, Russell who have to fight for simple survival.

Description:
Dutch Treat: Holland’s Golden Age of Painting
How did a country as small as Holland produce such an incredible number of artists? Rembrandt, van Ruisdael, de Hooch, and Jan Steen, among others, have given us memorable works of mythology, fields, faces and even humor. In this tour we will look at the landscapes, the portraits and the still lifes that defined this truly “golden age.” Some of the names will be familiar; some less so, but their paintings are things of beauty and worthy of a closer look.
Docent Lee Rubinstein holds dual degrees in English and History with a minor in Art History. She has been leading students through the galleries at the Getty since the program's inception in 2012. Additionally, in 2007, Lee created the curriculum for, and now runs, a volunteer art program in underserved schools in Los Angeles.

Using poetry to connect incarcerated youth and adults with their communities

Reentry members, known as Poet Ambassadors, are the core of these events, using their leadership skills and own experiences to offer a new way to engage with issues of youth violence and incarceration and to find healing through the powerful medium of creative writing.
What do I need to do?
All you need is a computer or tablet and an internet connection. There will be a live video presentation via Zoom at 7:00 with remarks from Free Minds staff and Poet Ambassadors.Participants will have access to read and respond to poetry by incarcerated writers. All responses will be collected and mailed to the poets following the event.
The objective is to have community volunteers gather alongside Free Minds Poet Ambassadors to provide uplifting feedback on the poetry of members still incarcerated, which is then returned to the poet. It is a simple but powerful way to support members’ processes of self-awareness and change, as well as read great writing.

Date: 06/12/24Time: 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Branch: Miller Branch
Age group: Adults
Program type: Gardening & Nature
Description:
The Inconvenient Book Club discusses the latest climate fiction. This summer, we'll talk about C. Pam Zhang's novel Land of Milk and Honey, a New York Times Notable Book that is part dystopia, part utopia, and all about food. In the midst of a world overcome by climate crisis, creeping smog, and dwindling food supplies, a passionate chef takes a job with a rich client in the rarefied air of a mountaintop resort. Zhang, a Beijing native raised in the U.S. who also wrote How Much of These Hills is Gold, writes about privilege, desire, environmental destruction, deception, and pleasure in this novel that has more than a touch of thriller to it.
NPR, in its "Books We Love" feature, said Land of Milk and Honey is “A profound exploration of human nature, the allure of pleasure and the choices we make in the face of adversity.” We'll talk about climate change, food, what we loved about the book, more food, and the power of Zhang's persuasion. Join us for a lively discussion led by two writers, one environmental and one literary.
Ask at the Adult Research Kiosk on second floor for a copy of the book, beginning 4 weeks before the discussion date.
Registration is preferred, not required.
