Presented by:
Sanorita Dey, an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Her research interests lie in the areas of human-computer interaction, social computing, diversity in STEM education, and ethical AI. Dr. Dey's work focuses on developing human-centric algorithms and applications that enhance the understanding and interaction of machines with the real world.
Nirupam Roy, an Assistant Professor in Computer Science at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD). His research interests are in human-centric security/privacy, ambient computing, and embedded AI. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 2018. His doctoral thesis was selected for the CSL Ph.D. thesis award at UIUC (2019). Dr. Roy also received outstanding thesis awards from both his undergraduate and Master's institutes. His work resulted in four patented techniques and inspired startups in acoustic perception and security. He received several recognitions for his work, including best paper awards (2022, 2017), best demo and poster awards (2024, 2021, 2020, 2013), and honorable mentions in the ACM SIGMOBILE research highlights (2017, 2023). He received the NSF CAREER award in 2023. Several of his research projects captured media attention for their relevance to the general audience and are featured in prominent news media, including the MIT Technology Review, Forbes Magazine, The Telegraph, and The New York Times. At UMD, he directs the iCoSMoS lab which has been supported by NSF, Meta Research, Maryland Transportation Institute, USG, and Saab, inc.

Women in Cryptology: Sharing the Burden (Online)

Women played a large, but rarely told, role in WWII cryptology. College women were recruited from math departments at colleges around the country to learn cryptanalysis. Thousands of other women joining the Army and Navy were assigned to code work operating machines that broke enemy codes or transmitting coded messages to Washington. This is their story. This online class is presented by the National Cryptologic Museum.

Step into the fun and active world of Adult Beyond Words, an inclusive monthly class designed to spark joy and ignite the imagination of people (ages 18+) with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities.
Participants may partake in five engaging stations, that include:
Motor Skills - with activities that celebrate fine motor movement and coordination
Arts & Crafts - where imagination and artistic vision come to life, giving voice to the unique expressions within
Cognitive Skills - with puzzles and cognitive challenges that nurture intellectual growth and problem-solving skills
Movement - with active games, physical challenges, and other movement exploration that focuses on gross motor skills, balance, etc.to get participants up and moving
Sensory - where calm, relaxation, and play combine to stimulate and regulate the senses to reduce anxiety and stress
With a new theme and different stations each month, Adult Beyond Words is not just a class; it's an invitation to celebrate the joy of discovery and the magic of shared experiences while creating personal connection and growth.
Participants may stay for as little or as long as they want.
Caregivers must stay with participants at all times.
