Ever since the school redistricting process started here in Howard County a few years ago, there are community members who are very vocal online, specifically on a “United” Facebook group. I taught in an elementary school in an “affluent” area. Parents had their children go to a private school rather than go to the “not so affluent” school their children were being redistricted to. One parent wrote “My child will not be going to school with those children, it is a bad school!” Who are “those” children? Our Black and Brown children? What makes it a “bad” school? The test scores? These group of parents continue with their online terror in scare tactics on SRO removal (their child won’t be safe without a police officer in school), bashing educators and our administration, suing the Board of Education when votes don’t go their way, calling Black Lives Matter in school indoctrination, bashing student Social Justice groups for holding safe spaces for students, and bashing our DEI reps in the schools for even discussing racial injustice. All of these “vocal” community members are White and the same people over and over.
