I was born and raised in Howard County. I’m half Filipino and half white. Growing up, I experienced extreme fetishism and microaggressions on a daily basis. I was bullied so bad that my Filipino mother couldn’t drop us off at school or the bus stop anymore.
I graduated from Glenelg high school in 2015, and there I was told by male students that they’ve always wanted to “f*ck an exotic”. They would call me oriental. I had friends tell me that I was “white enough to be their friend, but ethnically ambiguous enough for them not to be racist.” All while calling me the “ethnic friend”. Glenelg Is also well known for flying the confederate flag at football games. They were more strict on female dress code, than racism.
A year or so after I graduated, a group of boys vandalized Glenelg high school with racial slurs and swastikas. They didn’t suffer any consequences.
I went to Howard Community College for a few years, and I’ve had professors tell me “aren’t you Asian? Shouldn’t your grades be better than this?”
Recently I’ve seen how my middle school, Glenwood middle, was vandalized. The sign said “black lives matter to Glenwood Middle school” and someone spray painted the word “black” with white spray paint.
In the Columbia mall, I’ve been sexualized by employees. Received comments like “love me long time”, “gimme some Asian love”.
I knew this one guy who no longer works at the Columbia mall, to my knowledge, who would go after Asian women *specifically* because they looked young. So a mix of pedophilia and racism.
